Young Women in Public Affairs

Deadline March 20th

zontapikespeak.org

The Young Women in  Public Affairs Award of $2000 is presented annually in May to one young woman in the Pikes Peak Area who has demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to volunteerism in her school or community, as well as an awareness of global issues which affect the lives of women.

Only complete applications will be reviewed. They are due by March 20. Please feel free to print up as many copies of the application as you see fit or encourage your young ladies to download it from zontapikespeak.org. Go to the "Award Info" tab.  In the past, we have had young women deliver it to my doorstep on the very last day and that is fine, although not encouraged. You may pass along my email address to a girl who needs to contact me if the situation arises.

The Award winner will be picked and notified by Mar. 31 and then her name will be forwarded to the District office for the chance to win another $1000 and if she wins there, on to International for an additional $4000.  Last year we were thrilled when our young woman from Harrison District was one of the ten International winners, giving her a total of $7000! In past years, we have had local winners from Woodland Park, Miami-Yoder, and Monument, as well as from District 11 and District 20.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. You may also forward this information on to others whom I may have missed. All young women between the ages of 16 and 19 are eligible, so you may even know of a young woman who graduated last year who would make a terrific candidate for our award.  Good luck.

Assessment update for High School

As many people heard about the upcoming change and the short notice it provided to juniors, the State is reconsidering their decision for this school year.  They are working on a plan to have juniors take the ACT.  Mrs. Morrone, Mrs. Brownlee and Mrs. Ahlene, are working together to help provide good information for students to feel prepared for this assessment. The assessment is tentatively scheduled for April 19th with a make-up day on May 3rd.

Assessment changes for High school

January 02, 2016

State Selects the SAT for the 10th and 11th grade assessment

What does that mean for your student?

Please see information on the high school page as for a comparison between the ACT and the NEW SAT.

Not only did the state select the SAT provided through Collegeboard, but Collegboard has gone through a long process to update and change the SAT to a newer more updated version based on educational research.   In many ways, some of the test mirrors some of what students may be familiar with from the ACT.

Some other good news, there is a free test prep program through Khan Academy.  The downside is it is currently based on the old version of the test.   https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat

I will keep updating information as more informaiton becomes available.

Mrs. Morrone
