School Board Meetings are held once a month. The board holds its Business Meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, at 5:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated. Workshops and  Business Meetings are located at the High School Room 104. All board meetings are open to the public, except those specifically permitted by law to be "closed" for discussion of identified issues such as negotiation strategy or litigation (pursuant to Colorado statutes).

During meetings, the School Board works to set expectations for the district based on the values of the community and reviews the district's progress in meeting these expectations. The School Board is also updated on activities and projects taking place within the district. The public is encouraged to attend meetings. Two opportunities are provided at the regular board meeting for public comment. In January of 2018, we changed the format of our Work Sessions to allow for public comment after each topic of discussion. We won't move onto the next topic until the public has had an opportunity to provide comment on each topic.

Regular Board Meetings

The Spring of 2018 the board decided to adopt a "Consent Agenda" allowing the board to approve routine business items quickly. If a board member wants to discuss a topic on the consent agenda, they need to ask for the item to be removed from the consent agenda. Audience members can see what items are on the consent agenda by looking at the agenda posted on the website or by picking up a paper copy at the Board meeting.

Because most discussion on topics should have happened at the prior Work Session, many topics won't be discussed during the regular board meeting. Often we will vote almost immediately on a topic. This isn't because we don't want to discuss the topic, but most likely because we discussed the topic in length at the prior work session allowing board members time to hear discussion on various topics prior to being required to vote. By the time a topic comes up for a vote, Board members often have had a couple weeks to think about their vote after discussion at the work session.

Work Sessions

On June 16, 2021 all future work sessions were canceled until further notice.

In January of 2018 the board decided to schedule monthly Work Sessions. Work sessions will allow business board meetings to be more streamlined because most of our discussion at business board meetings would have happened at the prior work session. We will typically NOT vote on any topics during a work session. There are a few reasons why we are making work sessions a part of our monthly meeting schedule:

  • Allow for more in-formal discussion on topics
  • Allow the board to discuss topics in a meeting separate from the meeting when a vote occurs
  • Allow more time for the audience to provide input on discussion topics

Because one of the goals of Work Sessions are to provide the audience with more opportunities to have input into discussion topics, we will pause at the end of every agenda item after our discussion and allow audience members the opportunity to address the board. You do NOT have to fill out a comment card at Work Sessions; you simply raise your hand, state your name and provide comments for up to 2 minutes. Comments MUST relate directly to the topic we just finished discussing. We are hoping to limit audience comment to a total of 6 minutes per topic to keep the meeting moving. Please only speak if you have new points to address, rather than re-stating what someone else said.

This new Work Session format for audience participation is something new we are trying. If, for some reason, it doesn't work we will resume with our standard policy.

Public Comment at School Board Meetings

If you wish to speak during public comment during a regular board meeting, you will be asked to complete a comment card before the Board Meeting, which will be collected at the beginning of the meeting. Information included on this card is your name, address, relationship to the district and topic of public comment. Cards are available at the Board meeting. Since the purpose of the meeting is for the Board to conduct its business, it expects all participants in the meeting to maintain a proper sense of decorum and respect for all points of view. Public comment takes place at the beginning of the agenda. See public comment guidelines for more details.

Meeting agendas are posted to the website at least 48 hours prior to a meeting. View meeting schedules, agendas, and recordings here.
